Robert Lewis McClendon's Obituary
Lewis was born and raised in Charlotte, North Carolina, a graduate of Harding High. Lewis left this earth for his Heavenly home on December 31, 2020, following the steps of Jesus as he had asked the Lord to direct at the beginning of his cancerous journey.
When he entered the hospital, he was asked his goal. He said, “I told the Lord I don’t know what to do or what was going to happen, but please direct my steps.” The nurse wrote his goal on the board in his room. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not to your own understanding, but in all your ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your path.” I can truly say every step was directed. God is so good, all of the time.
Lewis was a man of faith, a man who loved and cared for his family, who took his whole family to the beach each summer. He was a gentle giant to the very end, who thought out everything before he acted, who depended on the Lord for everything.
In his earlier years, he accepted Jesus as his Savior at the old Durham Memorial Baptist Church and did attend Calvary Baptist and SRBC at various times.
Lewis was a good husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather and faithful to everyone he encountered, and successful in everything he undertook.
He is survived by his wife Vickie, to whom he was married for almost 60 years, and dated three years before marriage; daughter Lisa; son Michael; granddaughters Melanie, Emily, and Evamarie; great-grandchildren Isaiah, Savannah, “June,” and Tyler; sisters-in-law Sheila Caskey and Carol McClendon; plus significant others involved in his care – Ann, Chan, and Darius. He is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents William Warner and Eula Green McClendon; brothers John and David McClendon; parents-in-law R.S. and Margaret Ennis; sisters-in-law Diane Smith and Donna Carol Black; sons-in-law Sidney Smith, Joe Overcash, Charlie Black, Bud Caskey.
Thank you to Del, his homecare nurse; Dr. Daniel Carrizosa; nurse Karen; Dr. Evan Miller; Dr. Bart Farrell; and Dr. Douglas Villaret for their care and help.
Services will be at SRBC, Saturday, Jan. 9. The visitation will be from 2-3 pm. A celebration of life will follow at 3pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to SRBC, 4901 Statesville Road, Charlotte NC 28269.
The family would like to thank James Funeral Home of Huntersville, North Carolina for their help and care in our time of need.
