Robert Glenn Smothers, Jr.'s Obituary
Robert Glenn Smothers, Jr, also known as "RG," 75, of Charlotte, NC, went to be with his Heavenly Father on Sunday, November 20, 2022. He was surrounded by loved ones at his home on Retriever Way. He was born on February 10, 1947, in Radford VA and was the son of Robert Glenn and Marie Smothers.
R.G grew up in Fairlawn, VA and attended Dublin High School where his love of Virginia Tech and support of all things Hokie began. In his younger days, he played golf and attended NASCAR races. He enjoyed the beach and sun, gospel and country music, the daily national news, and some game shows. As years passed, he enjoyed staying home and watching baseball (Indians and Yankees), college football, and girls softball. Remaining a dedicated Hokie til the end, he watched all VA Tech sporting events wearing maroon and orange; he was most proud of his ‘VT’ tattoo!
R.G. was raised in Fairlawn Presbyterian Church, but later became a Baptist, serving as an adult Sunday School Teacher and choir member. He was ordained as a deacon at East Huntersville Baptist Church in Huntersville. A most fond memory and life experience for him was his 1991 Mission Trip to India.
Robert began his professional career in textiles at Klopman Mills in Dublin, VA. This continued into NC, SC, and even GA (13 years with Magla). Robert retired from Huntersville Belt Services Corporation after completing 18 years of service. Robert’s family and friends appreciated his sharp mind and quick wit, especially while playing cards with his children. Loyal family dog, Coco, often napped with her “best buddy” as R.G. laid in his hospital bed at home.
Robert is preceded in death by his parents, and former wife Linda Kinzer of Dublin, VA. He is survived by his daughters Leslie Friddle, Suzanne Kinney and husband Rob, of Randleman, NC; Son Robert Glenn Smothers, III and husband Clayton, and daughter Rebecca Dunn all of Huntersville, NC; Six grandchildren: Kelly Epperly and Kasey Jarrell of Highpoint, NC; Kyle Epperly and Chase Kinney of Randleman, NC; Katie Spencer of Huntersville, NC; Garrett Kinney of Liberty, NC. He is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Glenda and J.C Roudebush of Galax, VA. Former wife, Sherry Worden of Salisbury, NC has been his Best Friend of 44 years; he was blessed to have her and Eddie as a major support.
The family would like to send a special thanks to Robert’s friend and physician, Dr. Jack Faircloth and his staff at Atrium Family Clinic in Huntersville. Two special Hospice workers, Nurse Susan and Chaplin Pete (Pete and Coco bonded as well) All cards, calls, and visits have been greatly appreciated. Especially from Sarge and the guys at Huntersville Belts Services (You guys “lit-up” his room and gave him a much needed “lift”)
Per his request, Robert was cremated. The James Funeral Home in Huntersville will host the Memorial Service on Wednesday, November 30, 2022 at 2:30pm. His long time friend and pastor at Hunter Acres Baptist Church, Don Newell, will officiate.
James Funeral Home, of Huntersville, is serving the family and obituary lovingly written by the family.
