Sandy (known as Smitty at Northwest Airlines circa 1965, was my best friend while working for that airline at JFK/NY. He quickly became my surrogate 'older brother' I never had. I assisted him and his wife 'Cookie' go house hunting on Long Island, they finally settled in Lindenhurst.
Our friendship endured over the years keeping in contact 1-2 times a year (or more) for birthdays, Xmas, etc. He was always joking about something (wild sense of humor) that kept everyone in and around our department at the airport.
No one could get the better because he was very quick witted, something I lacked, but he constantly had me laughing.
However, he had a very serious side to him. He loved his wife dearly all these years. When we chatted privately we discussed life very deeply. He lost his mother just after he was drafted into the Army and was sent home to attend her funeral. Afterwards he was shipped off to Viet Nam.
He served with Honor and was very proud of his time in the service of our country.
After he arrived home his family he was left alone for many years looking for a soulmate. He finally met one and that was it!
Rest In Peace Brother...go with God!
