Shantay Anderson's Obituary
It is with profound sadness that we announce the recent passing of Shantay Anderson, 41, Of Charlotte, on September 9, 2024, at her home. Born on June 1, 1983, in Manning, SC, to Gladys Riley and the late Willie Brock, Shan was a beloved wife, sister, friend, entrepreneur, and dreamer whose impact on the lives of many will be cherished forever.
Raised in Summerton, SC, alongside her sisters, Tasha and Glinda, Shan was known for her kindness, her work ethic, intelligence and her vibrant spirit. She attended Scott's Branch High School, where she took pride in educating others about the school’s historic role in the Briggs vs. Elliott case, part of the landmark Brown vs. Board of Education ruling. Growing up, Shan was always kind, hard-working, smart and fun-loving. She was incredibly caring and loved helping others. A multi-talented student,she was enrolled in honors classes, Editor-in-Chief of the yearbook, a member of the choir with a lead role singing "Silver and Gold" by Kirk Franklin, and an active participant in FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America). Shan had a passion for the English language and loved reading and learning. During this time, she also worked at Stuckys/Dairy Queen so that she could help support her dreams of becoming a great successful woman and make it out of the small town she grew up in. Shan’s enthusiasm for cheerleading, intrinsic eye for fashion, and design sense were unmatched. She received many accolades including being voted best dressed. She was one in a million.
After graduating high school, Shan attended Johnson C. Smith University HBCU in Charlotte, NC, where she majored in Communications and continued her passion for cheerleading. Shan’s older sister, Tasha, helped her adjust to life in Charlotte, and their bond grew stronger during these years. During her college years, Shan worked at several jobs as she continued to follow her dreams. She worked at Hawthorne New York Style Pizza and Showmars, where she spread her loving personality with all those she came across. Though she once dreamed of becoming a television news anchor or continuing her career as a cheerleader, Shan found her true calling in serving her country and proudly joined the United States Coast Guard, where she thrived and made a lasting impact.
Throughout her distinguished military career, Shan's hard work ethic and beautiful personality were able to shine. She also made lifelong friendships and relationships wherever she went. Shan rose quickly through the ranks, serving in Philadelphia, Virginia, New Jersey, California, and New York City. She earned numerous commendations, including the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Coast Guard Meritorious Team Commendation, and Humanitarian Service Medal, among many others. Shan also served as a teacher, inspiring those around her with her dedication, love and leadership.
While stationed in New York City, Shan met and married the love of her life, Ivan Anderson. Together, they created a home filled with love, laughter, and joy, and their family grew with the addition of their beloved doggy, Henry whom Shan loved more than anything in the world. Shan’s joyful spirit uplifted her family – she was a dedicated and supportive wife who took immense pride in caring for her loved ones. She was an incredible wife who took care of and loved her family and took pride in taking care of her family. As a wife, she was passionate, loving, and supportive. She was the most amazing wife a man could ask for.
After retiring honorably from the Coast Guard in 2019, Shan pursued her entrepreneurial dreams by starting a small, successful Amazon business. Her passion for design, fashion, and business continued to flourish, and she touched the lives of everyone she met with her boundless energy, warmth, and grace.
Shan's legacy is one of love, compassion, and unwavering support. Her achievements, kindness, and the joy she brought to others will forever inspire those who were fortunate enough to know her. She will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
Shan was truly a great inspiration as she achieved her dreams and many more.
Her survivors include her husband, Ivan Robert Anderson, Doggy Henry Anderson, Sister Glinda, Nephew Nehemiah, Nephew Amarion, and Niece Thyla.
A service to celebrate her life will be held at 1 PM Saturday, September 21 at James Funeral Home with a reception to follow in the James Funeral Home Community Room.
