Shirley Ann Downey's Obituary
Shirley Ann Downey, 81, passed away peacefully on June 7, 2013 at Levine & Dickson Hospice House in Huntersville, North Carolina. She was born on November 17, 1931 in Gnadenhutten, Ohio to Lloyd Wesley Tedrick and Pauline Catherine Shull Tedrick (Dolly); sister of Larry (Kay) Tedrick of New Philadelphia, Ohio, and the late Walter (Marcia) Tedrick of Gahanna.
Shirley graduated from New Philadelphia High School in 1949. She was married to Don H. Downey in 1953. They resided in the Columbus, Ohio area for most of her life. She retired from the personnel department of the Fidesta Company. Shirley was known for sharing her wonderful homemade cookies and cakes, the love she had for working in her yard, and the time she devoted to helping elderly friends. Most of all, she was a passionate Ohio State Buckeye fan having spent over 25 years working as a “Red Coat” at the OSU football and basketball games.
Shirley is survived by her daughters, Cathy (Greg) Hansen of Huntersville, North Carolina; Kelly (Nick) Frame of Frisco, Texas; and Chris (Barry) Martens of Midlothian, Texas. She is also survived by grandsons Ross (Gina) Erickson of Dublin, Ohio and Scott Erickson of Vail, Colorado; granddaughters Kiley Martens and Megan Martens of Midlothian, Texas; and two-month old great-granddaughter Marley Erickson of Dublin, Ohio. She also leaves behind her life-long best friend Joan (Carlos) Rice of Orlando, Florida.
The family wants to thank niece Renee Tedrick of Gahanna, Ohio, and nephew Mike (Robin) Tedrick of Johnstown, Ohio, for their special care and many visits to Shirley during the past four years while she lived in Texas and North Carolina.
A memorial service will be held August 11, 2013 at 2:00 pm graveside at the GnadenhuttenCemetery. Afterwards, friends and family are invited to the home of James and Orlane Hawk in New Philadelphia, Ohio. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made in Shirley’s name to the Gnadenhutten Historical Society or the Levine & Dickson Hospice House in Huntersville, NC.
