Sonja Swift McCarn's Obituary
On Sunday morning, August 24, 2025, Sonja Swift McCarn peacefully returned home to her Lord. Born January 20, 1941, in Caswell County, North Carolina, to Lottie and Clyde Swift,
Sonja lived a life full of curiosity, joy, and a deep appreciation for the beauty in unexpected places. An antique dealer by trade and a true collector at heart, she had a remarkable gift for finding treasures and displaying them in ways that brought delight to others. Sonja’s passions were as unique as her spirit. She adored hearts, anything red-white-and-blue, and especially her beloved basset hounds—Oliver, Barney, Sadie, and Domino. Known for her mischievous sense of humor and larger-than-life personality, she never met a stranger. Whether at a flea market, yard sale, antique shop, thrift store, or even beside a discarded roadside pile, Sonja was always ready for her next adventure.
Sonja is survived by her sister, Peggy Way of Huntersville; her stepdaughter, Theresa Bechtold of Cornelius; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; many cousins; and countless dear friends who will cherish her memory. Her family extends heartfelt gratitude to the residents and staff of Williams Place of Davidson and Brookdale Charlotte East for the love, care, and friendships Sonja experienced during her time there.
A graveside service celebrating Sonja’s life will be held at Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church Cemetery at 4136 Mt Pleasant Road, Sherrills Ford, NC 28673 on Thursday, August 28, at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, gifts of remembrance may be made to Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church.
Arrangements are in the care of James Funeral Home, 10520 Arahova Drive, Huntersville, NC 28078.
