Susan Michelle Storm's Obituary
Mrs. Susan Storm, 66, of Huntersville, fought stubbornly (as usual), but ultimately succumbed to gall bladder cancer on Wednesday, July 10, 2024.
Susan was a Navy brat and moved all over the place when she was younger…a trait that would follow her for her whole life. Moving towns became as much a part of her life as anything else. California, Texas, Colorado, Tennessee, Alabama, Pennsylvania, North and South Carolina…the woman lived all over the place.
She loved to cross-stitch and created the best Christmas stockings for her kids the world has ever known. She enjoyed good books and poetry and once interviewed the Smothers Brothers at Studio 54. She loved Alabama football and would argue about the greatness of that storied program ad nauseum, and it wasn’t annoying at all to anyone else in her family. She also loved the Panthers, so what did she know? She hated Mother’s Day. She loved traditional church services and old hymns and good preachers that spoke hard truths to life and she once got a great baked bean recipe as a result. She was embarrassed by her children incessantly but was always on their side when they did stupid stuff unless it was, like, REALLY dumb. She loved all dogs and babies. She would do everything she could to be at her grandchildren’s games, performances, school events, whatever…they were her life. She was a radio DJ for both rock and country stations and once received a demo tape from Kenny Chesney and her station rejected it. She was selfless with her kids and would happily give her last dollar if they truly needed it. She had a hard time taking compliments but learned to live with them over time. She was amazing and complicated and simple and honest and she wouldn’t have wanted all this hullaballoo to be made for her. Too bad.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Margaret Elena Hightower (aka Gaga). Her father, Charles Edward Hightower, is still kicking around at 94. Her brother, Michael Edward, named her before she was born from the Everly Brothers song, “Wake Up Little Suzy”.
Susan is survived by her husband of 48 years, Tom Storm, and their 7 children: Matthew Thomas (Amanda), Patrick Charles (Melissa), Elena Michelle, Kevin Michael (Carrie), Hayley Irene Dixon (Matthew), Cassidy Madeline Azcue (Jorge), and Molly Catherine, and 13 grandchildren: Max, Madison, Analyn, Margaret, Evelyn, Jack, Hattie, Oliver, Jude, Emma, Ronan, Salem and Baby Azcue (due in November). They’ve almost run out of names.
Visitation services with the family will be held on Saturday, July 13 at 10 am, at James Funeral Home of Huntersville, with a funeral service at 11. Self-pay reception to follow at La Victoria Cocina in Huntersville (because she did so love Mexican food) beginning at 12:45pm.
