Sybil Wrenn Reynolds' Obituary
Sybil Wrenn Reynolds, 77, of Charlotte, died peacefully at Huntersville Oaks Nursing Facility on May 21, 2014. Sybil was born in Gastonia, North Carolina on October 11, 1936 to the late Lawrence B. Wrenn and Nettie C. Wrenn. In addition to her parents, Sybil was preceded in death by her half-sister, Evelyn Wrenn Killebrew, of Colonial Heights, Virginia.
Sybil grew up in Kernersville, North Carolina. After graduating from Kernersville High School in 1954, Sybil attended The College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia where she was a member of the William and Mary Choir; Delta Omicron, an honorary music society; Kappa Delta Pi, an honorary education society; and Mortar Board. During the summer breaks throughout college, Sybil performed in the outdoor drama, The Common Glory. Sybil graduated in 1958 with a Bachelor of Arts in Music. She earned a Master of Arts in Music Education from Appalachian State University in 1967. Sybil also furthered her education by taking courses in guidance counseling at UNC-Charlotte during the 1980s. Sybil taught elementary school music in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School system for many years, retiring in 1999. Sybil was active in her community and at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Madeline Tyson Covenant Class, sang in the Chancel Choir, served on numerous committees, and taught Sunday school with her husband.
Sybil is survived by her husband of over 50 years, Glen W. Reynolds of Charlotte; a son, Paul D. Reynolds and his wife, Susan S. Reynolds of Crouse; and a daughter, Amy K. Reynolds of Charlotte. Sybil will be forever remembered for her positive attitude after she suffered a severe stroke in May 2008 that left her partially paralyzed and unable to speak. Sybil still found a way to communicate with people through her beautiful smile and sparkling eyes. Her continued hope and faith are an inspiration.
We gratefully acknowledge the loving devotion of the members and staff of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, as well as family and friends, to Sybil. You have been such a source of strength not only to her, but to us. We also thank all of the devoted and caring staff at Huntersville Oaks. Please know that you are loved and may that love help to sustain you as you continue to care for others in need. Thank you also to Hospice and Palliative Care, Charlotte Region, for helping to care for Sybil in late 2012 and early 2013. She was with us for 1 ½ years longer than we originally thought she would be and every one of those days was a blessing.
A service to celebrate Sybil’s life will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, May 24, 2014 at Pleasant Gove United Methodist Church, 1915 Oakdale Road, Charlotte, NC 28216, officiated by the Reverend Billy Towery. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service. Burial will be private. Memorials may be made to Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 681900, Charlotte, NC 28216.
