Sylvia Sims' Obituary
Mrs. Sylvia Sims, 84 of Huntersville, North Carolina passed away peacefully on Friday, March 17, 2023.
Sylvia was born and raised in Mooresville, NC. She graduated from Mooresville High School and received her Bachelor's degree from High Point College. In her hometown of Mooresville, she met the love of her life, Bobby Sims. They were married July 3, 1960 and would spend the next 62 1/2 years together.
Sylvia was born to be an educator. She spent the entirety of her life helping others. She taught school for over 35 years, with 30 years teaching both English and Spanish at North Mecklenburg High School. Throughout her career, she developed lifelong friendships with her fellow teachers and students and remained extremely close with “Jeans Butterfly Group” until her final days. Her greatest teaching accomplishment of all was the way she demonstrated how to be a loving wife, mother, and grandmother to her family.
Sylvia loved her church, Huntersville United Methodist (HUMC), and was a loyal member for 45+ years. She was a member of the HUMC choir, many Bible study groups, and the United Methodist Women She was also a preschool volunteer and heavily involved with the HUMC Food Pantry. She was a woman who lived a life guided by Christ.
“Nana”, as she was known to family, loved to play golf and bridge, travel, and spend time with family and friends. She also thoroughly enjoyed attending her grandchildren's various activities, and watching her favorite sports teams- the Atlanta Braves, Charlotte Hornets, and Carolina Panthers.
Though she bravely battled ‘Pulmonary Fibrosis’ for many years, she continued to prioritize the well-being of her friends and family above herself. She was a selfless, smart, compassionate, and caring person who touched so many lives with her kind and loving heart. Nana loved everyone , and her love was reciprocated by all those around her.
She is preceded in death by her parents Neel and Helen Deaton, Brothers Donald, and Jimmy Deaton, and great-grandson Alec Lowe.
She is survived by her loving husband Bobby Sims, their 3 children- Sons Jeff Sims (Cary) and Rodney Sims (Christy), and Daughter Libby Allison (Todd); 11 Grandchildren- Austin Sims, Ashlyn Judge (Graham), Dylan Sims (Sabrina), Jordan Sims (Joyce), Hunter Sims, Carsyn Sims (Colby), Lindsey Allison, Christian Sims, Tanner Allison, Tate Allison, and Grayson Sims and great-grandchild Jasper Judge. A special thank you to her caretakers “Ava” and “Emma” and Hospice of Lake Norman who were such a special part of her life this past year.
It is often said, “Our lives are not just measured in years, but are measured in the lives we touch around us.” If so, few lives will ever be measured any higher.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, March 25th at 1 PM at Huntersville United Methodist Church with visitation and fellowship to follow. Private burial will be held Sunday at Glenwood Memorial Cemetery in Mooresville, NC.
