Celebrating the Life of Taihisha Salaam Grant
February 7, 1972 – June 15, 2025
A Life of Love, Music, Style, and Soul
Huntersville - Taihisha Salaam Grant, affectionately known as "Tai-Tai." Tai departed this life on June 15, 2025, at the age of 53, leaving behind a legacy that cannot be measured only felt deeply, remembered joyfully, and carried forward in love.
Taihisha was born on February 7, 1972, in Boston, Massachusetts, to Thomas and Sheila Grant. She was a miracle baby—arriving at just 2 lbs. and 14 oz, with a head full of beautiful red hair and a fierce determination that would carry her through life. A fighter from the very beginning, Tai-Tai quickly grew into a vibrant, strong, and dynamic force who would touch lives around the world.
Raised in Dorchester and Randolph, Massachusetts, Tai-Tai’s early years were filled with creativity, curiosity, and compassion. She attended St. Matthew’s Catholic School, John F. Kennedy Jr. High, and graduated from Randolph High School. She later continued her education at Bunker Hill Community College and the Blaine School of Cosmetology, where she earned her license as a professional stylist.
And let it be known—if you ever had your hair done by Tai-Tai, you left the chair feeling fabulous. She was a master at her craft. With precision, flair, and an eye for beauty, make up and styling, Tai-Tai knew how to pull you all the way together! She could do it all. But even beyond that, Tai’s soul beat for one thing above all: music. She once said, “Around six years old, my first concert lit a fire in me. It was like a light turned on, and I just knew singing and music would be my life.”
And what a musical life it was. Music ran through her bloodline—her family tree included a legendary artist—and she honored that legacy with passion and excellence. Inspired by icons like Anita Baker, Chaka Khan, James Taylor, and Stevie Nicks, Tai began singing in the church, where her voice soared in the choir and brought congregations to their feet. From there, she performed throughout Massachusetts and beyond.
As a professional artist, Tai Salaam was a gifted singer, songwriter, and performer. She was a featured vocalist for Hank and Keith Shocklee (Public Enemy) and released her first international singles If You Believe (NMC Groove Compilation) and Little Things (Welcome Wax Records). She penned the Billboard Dance Chart Top 10 single, Anything for Love, performed by Reina.
Tai also appeared on the soundtrack of the record-breaking documentary Hang the DJ, and performed her powerful contribution, To the Land of Happiness, at the Cannes Film Festival. She worked under the mentorship of Donna Summer (Driven by the Music) and Bruce Sudano (The Brooklyn Dreams) and contributed as a songwriting assistant for Welcome Productions.
Her internationally loved house music projects include How Do I Love You (FADDA Records UK), Choices (produced by Neal Conway), Searchin’ (House Sound of LA), Don’t Want to Lose, Free Your Soul (In the Zone Entertainment), and Excited (produced by Andrew Edward Brown). She was preparing to release her much-anticipated Love EP in the summer of 2025, produced by Erik Rico for LifeNotes Music.
Yet Tai-Tai’s brilliance extended beyond music and beauty. She was the ultimate hostess with a heart of gold—a five-star chef in her own kitchen. Her love language was food, and her joy was bringing people together to share it. Whether she was throwing a grand holiday meal or an intimate dinner party, every dish was served with warmth, flavor, and love.
Tai was cosmopolitan, cultured, stylish, and uniquely her own. She traveled the world, collected beautiful experiences, and made friends wherever she went. And if you knew Tai-Tai, you knew her signature: leopard print everything—bold, elegant, and undeniably her. She was a lover, a listener, a storyteller, a dreamer. She loved fiercely, laughed freely, and uplifted everyone in her orbit. She gave so much of herself—to her family, her community, her art—and we are better because she lived.
Tai-Tai leaves behind a circle of loved ones who will continue to carry her spirit forward. Her loving parents, Thomas and Sheila Grant, Her devoted sister, Mattie Grant-Finch, and brother-in-law Willie Finch, Her cherished brother, Robert Grant. Brother, Thomas Grant Jr. Sisters, Magdalene Palmer, Terri Brown, Pamela Ash, and Bridgit Brown. Her beloved sister-cousins: Mimi Dohler, Brooklyn Sudano McGlaflin, Amanda Ramirez, Katonya Gaines, Asha Immanuelle and Ayanna Cato who proceeded her in death. Her lifelong sister-friends, Kim Falcione-Spears and Nikki Hazzard. Her Godmother Lavonne Carl, Her precious godchildren, Devon Stanley, Savannah Dohler, Aja Richards, Jalia Richards and Jair Richards and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and dear friends who will never stop loving her. Taihisha loved her people immensely and fiercely. Her presence filled rooms, her laughter lifted spirits, and her love knew no bounds. She will be deeply missed. She will be lovingly remembered and she will be eternally celebrated.
Rest in power and peace, Tai-Tai.
Your music, your meals, your magic, and your heart will live on forever.
