Teresa Long's Obituary
Teresa Slavin Long, of Concord, age 62, passed from this earthly life into the presence of the Lord on July 2, 2017 after a hard-fought battle with ovarian cancer.
Born in Wilson, NC on October 3, 1954 she was the daughter of Mary O. Slavin and the late William Calvin Slavin of Rocky Mount, NC. Teresa grew up in Rocky Mount, where she met her high school sweetheart and future husband, Mike. She began her college career at East Carolina University and graduated from NC Wesleyan College in 1976, marrying Mike during her junior year. Because of her love for children, Teresa taught elementary school in the Rocky Mount City School System as well as the Edgecombe and Wake County systems—she was beloved by her students.
Teresa was devoted to her family, and after the birth of their twins, she and Mike decided it would be best for her to stop working outside of the home and focus on raising their children. She was an exceptional homemaker, wife, and mother.
Her love of family was known by all. She and her family lived in Cary, NC; Charlotte, NC; Albuquerque, NM; Mooresville, NC; Ocean Isle Beach, NC; and Concord, NC. After raising her children, Teresa re-entered the workforce as the office manager for the family business, where her sweet personality made her a client favorite.
The most important place on this earth to Teresa was Ocean Isle Beach—she loved to be there with Mike and surrounded by her children and grandchildren, to just enjoy the beauty of God’s creation with those closest to her. She loved walking on the beach and being on the water, whether going for a boat ride, swimming, or paddle-boarding on calm waters. And she especially loved playing in tide pools with her grandkids.
She also loved to travel and enjoyed seeing much of the US, Europe, Canada, and Mexico. The Caribbean Islands were a favorite spot too.
Teresa leaves behind to cherish her memory, husband and life partner of 43 years, John Michael Long; daughter Ashley Long Drake and husband Justin of Concord, NC; son Bradley William Long and his wife Ashley of Clemmons, NC; and grandchildren Bryson William Long and Caroline Ragan Drake. She is also survived by her mother, Mary O. Slavin of Rocky Mount, NC; brother C. Bruce Slavin and wife Debra of Rocky Mount, NC; brother Edward W. Slavin and wife Tina of Morehead City, NC; brother David K. Slavin and wife Judy of Rocky Mount, NC; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at StoneBridge Church Community in Charlotte, NC on Saturday July 8, 2017 at 2pm with the Reverend Kevin Burrell and the Reverend Richard Farrand officiating. The family will host a reception in the church fellowship hall immediately following the memorial service.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of Cabarrus County, 5005 Hospice Lane, Kannapolis, NC 28081.
Arrangements by James Funeral Home of Huntersville, NC.
