Thelma Barber's Obituary
Thelma Vicks Barber, 87, of Charlotte died March 1, 2022 at her home. She was born in Danville, VA on October 27, 1934 to the late Charlie and Mary Vicks.
Thelma loved the Lord, her family, people of all backgrounds, and having fun. She always made everyone feel welcome and loved. She was an incredible mother and grandmother as well as a great-grandmother--truly “family” was one of her highest values.
Thelma was very involved all her life in God’s work and supporting the ministry of the church, and her church family was dear to her. In 1996, she became a charter member of Harvest Community Church. She actively served for many years in Vacation Bible School, participated in Bible studies and served in the kitchen or wherever needed.
Thelma was full of life, often playing Bunco and cards with friends and joining various activities with groups of ladies. She held many different jobs through the years before retiring, including such diverse things as working in a cotton mill, serving as a bank teller, and being co-owner of a catering and florist business. She did well at these but her real love was people and adventure. She was always appreciative of the work God had done in her life and wanted others to also experience the same salvation and peace through Jesus Christ.
Her husband Otis preceded her in death.
Survivors include son, Jerry Barber and wife Tish; daughter, Cheryl Hancock and husband Bob; grandchildren, Robby Hancock and wife Jill, David Hancock and wife Jenny, Jenna Yost and husband Nathan, Jonathan Barber and wife Hellen, Justin Barber and wife Natalie, Preston Barber and wife Ali; great-grandchildren, Kayden, McKenna, Skylar, Hannah, Emmy, Bennett, Jayden, Jacob, Addison, Ayla, Judah, and Matthias.
Visitation will be Sunday, March 6 at Harvest Community Church from 3:30-5:00 pm, outdoors under the picnic shelter.
The funeral service will be Tuesday, March 8 at 1:00 pm at Harvest Community Church with burial to follow at Gethsemane Memorial Gardens.
James Funeral Home of Huntersville is serving the family.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for memorial gifts to be directed to her home church which she loved, Harvest Community Church, 13301 Eastfield Rd., Huntersville, NC 28078.
