Urban Linn's Obituary
Urban Peter Linn, 93, of Charlotte, NC died on August 31 at the Preston House. He was born on June 20, 1924 in Rosen, MN, the son of Joseph and Martha Linn.
Urban, the youngest of seven children, was raised in the German Catholic farming community of western Minnesota. Upon graduating high school, he enlisted into the US Army Air Corps in 1942, serving in Italy during World War II as an armorer in the US 47th Bomb Group, 12th Air Force.
Upon returning to the United States after the War, Urban became a flight instructor and made his way to Maryland and the shores of the Chesapeake Bay, where he met Virginia Young, who herself was trying to learn how to fly. To two were married in 1956, and would have two children, Julie and Matthew, both of whom he cherished.
Urban was a family man. He loved taking his son and daughter to Orioles baseball games, ice skating, the library, and of course, air shows.
“Urb”, as he came to be known, landed a job as an air traffic controller at Martin Airport (now Glenn L. Martin State Airport) in Middle River, MD, where his calming voice and steady demeanor would become greatly appreciated by the many pilots who relied upon his guidance.
He later joined Lockheed Martin Aerospace and upon his retirement in 1989, he conveyed his love and expertise of aviation history as docent at the Glenn L. Martin Aviation Museum, delighting school children with his tours for many years. While not at the airport, he was with Virginia on a cruise, pursuing his love of travel.
In 2016, Urb and Virginia moved to Charlotte, NC, where he became a resident of Preston House and quickly graced the warm staff with his loving presence.
He touched the lives of everyone he met, and will be greatly missed by all.
Survivors include his wife Virginia Young Linn; his son, Matthew Linn and Matthew’s wife, Erica of Sleepy Hollow, NY; and his daughter, Julie McLelland, and her husband Joseph, of Charlotte.
A funeral service will be held at 2 PM Tuesday, September 5 at Holy Covenant United Church of Christ with visitation one hour prior at the church. Interment will be held at North Lake Memorial Garden, Huntersville, NC. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Cure Alzheimer’s Fund (http://www.curealz.org).
