Vernon McCord's Obituary
Charles Vernon McCord, lovingly known as “Vernon,” age 82, of Charlotte, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at home on July 26, 2025, surrounded by his devoted family.
Born April 6, 1943 in Charlotte to J. Howard McCord and Ruth Auten McCord, Vernon was a lifelong Charlotte resident with deep roots in the community. He attended Paw Creek Elementary, Wilson Junior High, and graduated from West Mecklenburg High School in 1961.
Shortly after graduation, Vernon married his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Rose Marie Trakas, on July 7, 1961. Together, they shared 64 wonderful years of marriage, raising a beautiful family filled with love and laughter. Vernon and Marie were blessed with five children: Tina Ferrell (Donald), Kim Ballard (Danny), Sandy McCord (Michelle), Randy McCord (Kim), and Christopher McCord (Tiffany). He was a proud grandfather to 13 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
Vernon is also survived by his beloved sister, Juliana McCord Flowe, and was preceded in death by his dear sister, Peggy McCord Hass.
Vernon worked for many years at Lucent Technologies before retiring. He was a man of integrity, passion, and quiet strength. One of his proudest achievements outside of being a devoted brother, husband, father, and grandfather was being a founding member of the first West Mecklenburg High School golf team. A lifelong sports enthusiast and “MVP” in every way, Vernon had a true passion for golf. From 2014 to 2025, he remarkably shot his age 139 times, an extraordinary feat that speaks volumes to his dedication and skill.
Friends fondly called him “D,” short for Diesel, because of his quick pace and infectious energy. His laugh was known and loved by all — warm, genuine, and always contagious. Vernon had a rare ability to make everyone feel seen and valued. He was always present and showed up for those he loved, no matter what.
A man of deep faith, Vernon was a longtime member of Saint Mark’s Catholic Church in Huntersville, North Carolina, where he worshipped and served with heart and devotion.
A Celebration of Life will be held July 30, 2025, beginning at 5:00 PM at James Funeral Home, Huntersville, NC, followed by a visitation.
A Catholic Mass will be held July 31, 2025 at 11:00 AM at Saint Mark’s Catholic Church, Huntersville, NC. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Vernon will be forever loved and missed by his adoring family, countless friends, and all who had the joy of knowing him. His life was an inspiration — filled with faith, love, laughter, and a lasting legacy.
