Virginia Young Linn's Obituary
Virginia “Chick” Young Linn, 95, of Charlotte, NC died on February 18, 2026, at Given’s Aldersgate. She was born on November 9, 1930, in Baltimore, MD, the daughter of Rose Salvo Young. Virginia, the oldest of three children, was raised in Middle River, MD during the Great Depression and ensuing years of World War II.
During the War, her mother worked in the nearby Grumman aircraft factory as a ‘Rosie the Riveter’ on the assembly line for the Wildcat fighter airplane. Virginia would soon develop an interest in aviation herself and joined the Civil Air Patrol where she met flight instructor Urban Linn at Harbor Field in Baltimore. The two were married in 1956, and would have two children, Julie and Matthew, both of whom she treasured. She loved taking her daughter and son to swimming lessons and the library, where she shared her love of reading with both. Chick and Urb were married for over 50 years.
Virginia worked in the 1950’s for the Donnelly Advertising Agency in downtown Baltimore and later worked for the Baltimore City Health Department. She specialized in outreach to senior citizens and was nominated an honorary Jewish grandma by the seniors.
Virginia enjoyed Big Band and Jazz music as well local theater. She was an enthusiastic supporter of Women’s Rights and an active member in the Older Woman’s League, particularly in the 1970’s. Upon retirement, she and Urban loved taking cruises, bus trips, and building her library of mystery novels.
In 2015, Chick and Urban moved to Charlotte, NC, to be closer to her daughter and son-in-law. In 2022, she became a resident of Given’s Aldersgate skilled nursing facility where she quickly graced the warm staff with her gentle demeanor. She touched the lives of everyone she met and will be missed by all.
Survivors include her brother, Edward Jennings of Punta Gorda, FL, Matthew Linn and his wife, Erica of Sleepy Hollow, NY; and her daughter Julie McLelland, and her husband Joseph, of Charlotte.
A memorial service will be held at 2pm on Sunday, February 22 at James Funeral Home Huntersville which is serving the family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Cure Alzheimer’s Fund (http://www.curealz.org). Visitation will be 30 minutes prior. Burial will follow at Northlake Memorial Gardens.
