Walter Glenn Pope,'s Obituary
Walter Glenn Pope, Jr., also known as “Bob or Bobby” to many, 69 of Charlotte, passed away peacefully at home with his family by his bedside on October 22, 2013 after an 11 month battle with cancer.
He was born on February 16, 1944 in Charlotte, NC and was the son of the late Walter Glenn Pope, Sr. and Edna Helms Pope. He graduated from Hickory High School in 1962 and then served his country in the US Army Reserves for several years. Walter attended Lenior Rhyne College and graduated with his Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration in 1970 and was an active Shriner in the Masonic Lodge. He then went on to work for the NC Department of Revenue in Charlotte, NC for 30 years as a tax auditor and retired in January of 2000. He was very involved with his children and family and loved sports, especially Tarheel Basketball. He was a very dedicated coach for his children’s sports teams, loved working in the yard and garden, and had a special interest in cooking. Bobby was also an avid animal lover and loved all of his animals, especially “Kitty”. He was loved by many in the Long Creek Community. His best buddy and very close friend Bob Garnett and family, really meant the world to him and his family. Bob Garnett was like a brother to Bobby, sharing numerous family memories, especially yearly beach trips. The beach and beach music was Bobby’s love.
Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Lena Farmer Pope; a son, Johnathan Walter Pope of Charlotte; a daughter, Jennifer Balesky and husband Thomas of Cornelius; four sisters, Glenda Towery and husband Tommy of Hickory, Judy Herring of Hickory, Carolyn Young and husband Myles of Charlotte and Janice Pope of Hickory; one granddaughter, Brianna Maegan Yates of Cornelius and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service to celebrate his life will be held on Saturday, October 26, 2013 at 1:00 pm, in the chapel of James Funeral Home, with Rev. Walter Burgess officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service at funeral home.
