William "Ed"Edward Haigler's Obituary
Edward Haigler, 82, of Huntersville, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, October 2, 2019 after a brief, but courageous, battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his family, who loved him dearly and were inspired by him daily.
Edward was born on July 28, 1937 in Marshville, NC to the late Vernon D. and Ona Lee Tarlton Haigler. He was one of six children raised on their Union County farm and taught to love God, work hard, and serve others.
He graduated from Marshville High School in 1956. Edward’s hard work ethic began young. While in high school, he drove a school bus and caught chickens in the morning before going to school. He began his career at the U.S. Postal Service in Charlotte as a letter carrier, where he served for more than 35 years. Edward loved his work and made many friends at the post office, some who gave him the nickname “mule” because of his dedication and hard work.
Edward’s life spoke loudly through his quiet deeds and actions. He was baptized as a child at Austin Grove Baptist Church in Marshville. Later, he became an active member of Eastway Baptist Church in Charlotte for 45 years, where he served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, and in various other roles. He loved going on mission trips to West Virginia to build churches, repair homes and share God’s love. He also served as an active member at First Baptist Church-Huntersville in his later years and volunteered at the clothing closet, worked at the World Hunger yard sale, and participated in senior adult activities.
Edward’s greatest passion and love was for his wife of 62 years, Doris Davis Haigler. Married at 20, he and Doris built a life together based on faith and family. They had one son, Eddie, who made their life complete. He also leaves to cherish his memory a daughter-in-law, Jerri; one grandson, William, and a granddog, Daisy. Edward made their lives full and will live on forever in their hearts.
Edward was a gardener, chocolate pie lover and master of fixing anything.
Other survivors include his sister, Eleanor Horne; brothers Roy (Jodie) and Jimmy (Julia), brothers-in-law Dewitt Redfern and Ed Davis, sisters-in-law Polly Haigler and Phyllis Davis, and a host of nieces, nephews and special friends.
He is pre-deceased by his parents, brother Vernon Carroll Haigler, sister Corinne Redfern, and brother-in-law Truby Horne.
A Celebration of Life Service for Edward will be held on Saturday, October 5 at 3 p.m. at James Funeral Home (10520 Arahova Drive, Huntersville, NC). Visitation will be held prior to the service from 1-3 p.m. Following the Celebration of Life, burial will be held at First Baptist Church-Huntersville (119 N Old Statesville Road, Huntersville).
Memorials may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care Lake Norman (705 Griffith Street, Suite 203, Davidson, NC 28036) or to First Baptist Church-Huntersville Building Fund (119 N Old Statesville Road, Huntersville, NC 28078).
The Haigler family would like to thank the medical professionals who served Edward. Special thanks to Hospice for providing peace and support to Edward and his family.
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day – and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing. – 2 Timothy 4:7-8.
James Funeral Home of Huntersville is serving the family.
