Dear Carol,
I am so saddened to learn of Bill's passing. I have often thought of you both since you moved to Florida. You were great neighbors. On many occasion I tell the story of my very abbreviated tennis outing with Bill. As you recall, Bill had been trying to get me to play tennis with him for some time. Although I was still competing in the decathlon, I had not played much tennis and knew that it would be an unchallenging event for him since he (as well as you) were highly ranked players in SC. After a brief warm up during which I managed to get the ball back across the net fairly regularly, I won the racket flip to serve first. I was really pumped up and hit my very best serve ever to him, but with such force that I perforated my Achilles tendon. While falling to the court, I heard a loud crack and turn my head just in time to see that Bill had hit a line drive that just clipped the back line on the other side of the court. I thought - If this had to happen, I am sure glad it was on the first shot before Bill recognized just how bad I was.
The rest of the story demonstrates Bill's kindness, concern and generosity. Though it was about 5 in the afternoon, Bill insisted on calling Jack Keith to see if he could perform the surgery that night since a delay might yield suboptimal results. Jack agreed that I needed an athletic repair right away and assembled the surgery team. Bill not only did not get to play a tennis match that he was looking forward to but spent several hours with me before, during and after surgery - all after a very hard day at the office and hospital.
I am more active that ever doing medical research in several countries. Please extend my deepest sympathies to Bill, Cam, Barbara, Joe and your other family.
God Bless!
Jack
