William King's Obituary
William Frederic "Pop" King, 91, of Huntersville, NC passed away peacefully on November 19, 2016. He was born on March 28, 1925 in Pittsfield, MA to the late Joseph and Ethel King.
He served in the US Navy during World War II as a signalman, third class, on a submarine chaser. After serving his country, Pop returned to Springfield College in MA . He earned his Master’s degree in Physical Education and was captain of the baseball team.
After earning his degree in 1950, Pop taught in Baltimore, MD for four years. He then relocated to Long Island, NY, where he taught and coached baseball in the Amityville School District for 27 years. Pop was inducted into the Amityville High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2012.
He was an avid Cubs fan since the age of 10, lucky to see them win the World Series this year.
Survivors include his wife Elizabeth Brooks King; son, Bruce King and wife Kim of Selden, NY, their son Thomas; daughters, Robin Newman of Waxhaw, NC, her children Andrew, Michelle, and Jonathan; Susan Cavasinni and husband Ernest of Huntersville, NC, their children Michael, Joseph, and Lauren; and Karen Haab of East Hampton, NY, her daughter Rachel.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, November 25 in the chapel of James Funeral Home. He will be laid to rest at Salisbury National Cemetery with military honors on March 28, 2017.
