William Speicher's Obituary
William Clayton Speicher, 85, of Davidson, North Carolina, passed away on Wednesday, January 4, 2023. He was born on April 1, 1937, in Accident, Maryland, to the late Clayton and Leila Speicher.
Bill was married to his best friend and love of his life, Louise, for one month shy of 60 years; he was a loving husband who became Louise’s caretaker during her later years of life. He was also a proud and supportive father and grandfather.
Following his graduation from University of Maryland, Bill spent 6 years as a jet pilot in the USAF. From there he enjoyed a stellar career with United Airlines, culminating in his last and favorite position -- Senior VP overseeing the airline’s Pacific Division. Bill was also involved in running United Airline’s PGA Hawaiian Open for 20 years, and in the later years he served as the Chairman of the Executive Committee.
Bill loved to travel, visiting more than 30 countries and 49 states, meeting many new friends along the way. His travels throughout his career and retirement left him with marvelous memories and stories to share. One of Bill’s best qualities was his ability to communicate with people from all walks of life and diverse cultures; he took a genuine interest in everyone he met.
For Bill, golf was a passion more than a hobby and he was fortunate to play many of the greatest courses in the US and in the UK. On any given weekend, one could watch a televised PGA event with Bill, and he would tell you when he played that course and what he scored on each hole.
Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Louise, and survived by son, Michael Speicher; daughter, Julie Flaherty (Chris); four grandchildren, Emma, Clare, Dylan, and Ethan; and 2 sisters: Beverly Kline (Michael); Mary Ellen Rader (John); and one brother: Tom Speicher (Sandy).
The family will receive visitors at James Funeral Home in Huntersville on Friday, January 13th from 5pm to 7pm. Funeral services will be at 10am on Saturday, January 14th at the Davidson United Methodist Church Chapel.
Memorials can be sent to Davidson United Methodist Church Chancel Choir or The National Audubon Society.
