William Stanley Jr.'s Obituary
In Loving Memory of
William Lawrence Stanley, Jr.
August 1st, 1947 - October 13th, 2024
William L. Stanley, Jr., 77, of Denver, NC passed peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones on October 13th, 2024. Known more notably as Bill, Billy or Papa, he lived a life full of adventure, joy, and love. Born in Jersey City, New Jersey, the shore held a special place for him especially Avon-by-the-Sea. His journey then took him to sunny Arizona and the beautiful landscapes of California, before settling down in North Carolina, where he found a place to call home. It was there that his love for the beach blossomed, with Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach holding a special place in his heart. Even at the age of 70, Bill was still embracing new experiences, taking his first international trip to Punta Cana.
A proud veteran of the United States Air Force, he also served as President of the Mercurians, a serviced based group via the YMCA. His passion for sports began with little league baseball and led him to play semi-pro baseball for a time. In his 20’s, he found joy in Sports Communications, where he served as the sports writer for his local paper. He remained a dedicated fan of the Carolina Panthers, Duke basketball, and his beloved New York Yankees.
Music was the rhythm of Bill's soul especially while taking a drive with the windows down. He was a huge fan of the Dave Matthew’s Band and countless other musicians. He was married to Elaine, his loving wife of 38 years, until her passing in 2013. He was a loving father to Patrick of Port St. Lucie, FL and Amanda (Adam) of Charlotte, NC. While he was the best dad, his favorite title was Papa to Liam and Grace of whom he was deeply proud.
In 2014, he met his wife Mary who loved and cared for Bill until his passing. He also embraced four bonus children and nine bonus grandchildren.
Bill is preceded in death by his parents, William L. Stanley, Sr. and Marie O’Neill.
He is survived by his wife Mary, his children and grandchildren, his siblings Thomas Clifford and Kathy O’Neill of Simi Valley, CA, his sister Marele (Jim) of Sun City West, AZ. along with countless cousins, nieces and nephews in various areas of the country.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the hospice team at VIA Health Partners of Lincoln County. Most importantly to Dr. Deng, and the oncology team at Novant Health Cancer Institute Mooresville for their compassionate care and support during Bill's journey.
If you knew Bill, you know he had an unwavering loyalty to Pepsi, which he drank with such dedication that it practically flowed through his veins.
In his honor, let's raise a glass of Pepsi and remember Bill for the incredible life he lived, the joy he spread, and the stories that we will all hold dear.
A celebration of Bill’s life will be held on Friday, October 18th, 2024 at 11am at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Cornelius, NC. Lunch reception to follow in the Family Life Center.
