William "Whit" Davis' Obituary
Mr. William Whitfield “Whit” Davis, 90, of Mooresville, passed away Saturday, February 4, 2017.
Whit was a native of Mecklenburg County and served the city of Charlotte as a firefighter for over 32 years. He retired as a station commander at the rank of captain of Charlotte Fire Station #4. In 1944, he won the Golden Gloves Middle Weight Championship. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in Patton’s 3rd Infantry as a heavy mortar crewman during World War II. In the Army, he was an undefeated boxer, and played baseball and football. Whit was a charter member of Long Creek Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and trustee. He enjoyed raising beef cattle, hunting, gardening, playing ping pong, and watching sports, especially the UNC Tarheels. His favorite activity was spending time with his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur A. and Blandina Utley Davis, his nine siblings, brothers; David, Jim, Earl, Tom, Oran, Alfred Davis, sisters; Agnes Knox, Polly Earnhardt, and Lottie Campbell.
Mr. Davis is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary Neal Monteith Davis, their daughters; Carol Hager (David), Karen Harris (Mark), grandchildren; Brett, Jared (Megan), Tyler, Jake, and Shelby. The family expresses their gratitude to Whit’s caregivers at Autumn Care and his long time attendant, Margaret.
The family will receive friends at 10 a.m. Wednesday, February 8 with funeral services at 11:00 a.m. at James Funeral Home of Huntersville. Committal services will follow at Northlake Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
