Wilson Whitlow's Obituary
Wilson Reid, “W.R.”, Whitlow, 89, of Huntersville, died May 11, 2013 at The Gardens at Taylor Glen. He was born on October 22, 1923 in Mecklenburg County to the late John W. Whitlow and Pinkie Ferrell Whitlow. He was preceded in death by his wife Louise Hucks Whitlow and his brothers Charles and Clarence Whitlow.
After graduation from Huntersville High School in 1942, he served in the Army Air Corp as a B-17 bomber radio operator during World War II. Upon returning home, Wilson became a lifelong member of the American Legion, Huntersville Post and joined Independence Hill Baptist Church, where he served as treasurer and Sunday school teacher for many years. He owned and operated Whitlow’s Body Shop in Huntersville and also worked in TV and radio repair, until joining Magla Products as a plant engineer, retiring after 25 years of service. In retirement, Wilson traveled, played golf, and pursued woodworking and stained glass in his shop on Hucks Rd, while enjoying a cigar. In 2002 he became a charter resident of The Gardens at Taylor Glen retirement community in Concord. The family would like to thank the administration and staff for their love and care, especially in the last 2 years.
Survivors include his daughters, Judy Murphy of Charlotte and Margaret Howard, husband Thomas, of Birmingham, AL; brother, John Ross Whitlow of Charlotte; grandchildren: Caitlin Kirby, husband Greg; Nathan Howard; Jamie Murphy; and Sean Murphy, wife Amy. Great-grandchildren: Will, Jenna, and Josh Kirby; Shai and Aidan Murphy.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Independence Hill Baptist Church (Building Fund or Hearts For Heros Fund), 10220 Eastfield Rd., Huntersville, NC 28078.
The family will receive friends Monday, May 13 at Independence Hill Baptist Church (Worship Center) from 6-8 PM.
The funeral service will be held at 2 PM Tuesday in the chapel of Independence Hill with Rev. Todd Marlin officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
