David McElveen's Obituary
David William McElveen, 58, of Concord, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at the Hospice House of Huntersville on Thursday, September 21, 2023. He was a loving child of God and devoted father, husband, son, brother and friend.
He was born on June 18, 1965, in Winston Salem, NC to Rev. Dr. William McElveen and Carol McElveen. He was a graduate of R. J. Reynolds High School and UNC Charlotte. He worked as an insurance professional for GMAC, Liberty Mutual, Allstate, and Kemper for a total of 32 years.
David was a dedicated athlete throughout his life: a football player, wrestler, weightlifter, and competitive body builder. Later in life, he taught his children to throw a ball, ride a bike, and play various sports. He enjoyed coaching his sons, Mason and Saxon, in baseball for many years; and as they got older, he was their biggest fan in the stands. He also served as the announcer for Mallard Creek High School baseball. He supported his daughter, Hailey, by attending her dance recitals, piano, band and chorus concerts, as well as her high school and college golf tournaments.
He was always quite an entertainer, with his silly antics and hilarious stories; and his heartfelt smile would light up any room. Yet, when it came to communicating with his employees and customers, coaching his ball players, or disciplining his children, he meant business.
David was a faithful follower of Christ, raised in the Moravian Church. As an adult, he was an active member of Mallard Creek Presbyterian Church and later Assurance United Methodist Church. He attended Sunday School classes, small groups, and worship services. Additionally, he served meals and provided transportation for our homeless neighbors.
David fought a courageous battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), and now he has eternal life without suffering. He is survived by his wife of almost 16 years, Tamara McElveen; son, Mason McElveen and fiancée Cameron; son, Saxon McElveen; daughter, Hailey Ellis; parents, William (Bill) and Carol McElveen; sister, Miriam Robinson and husband, Calvin; brother, Gregory McElveen and wife, Lisa; parents-in-law, Ronald and Sandra Ellis; along with many nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to express their deepest appreciation to the Assurance UMC members that visited and provided meals for almost two years. They would also like to thank David’s medical team at the Wake Forest ALS Clinic and his care team at Levine and Dickson Hospice House of Huntersville.
Please join us in celebrating David’s life. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Friday, September 29 at Assurance United Methodist Church in Huntersville, NC. The funeral will be held on Saturday, September 30 at 2:00 pm at the church.
