Ed Walkup's Obituary
Burton Edward Walkup, “Ed,” age 68, of Charlotte, passed away on Wednesday, July 2, 2014. “Mr. Ed” was born October 23, 1945, in Charlotte to the late Burton Pickens Walkup and Chloe Traywick Walkup. Surviving are his wife, Vicky McClure Walkup and sons Burton, Clint, and Nathan Walkup and granddaughter, Olivia Walkup. Ed is also survived by his sisters Martha Robinson (Mike) and Cindy Blackwelder (Bob).
Locally educated, Ed graduated from Garinger High School, 1964, Wingate Jr. College, 1966, and Campbell University, 1971. Ed earned his Eagle Scout from Charlotte’s Troop 26 in 1961. During high school, he joined the U. S. Navy Reserve in 1963 and served 27 years, retiring as a CWO4. While on active duty, during the Viet Nam era, Ed served two years on the aircraft carrier USS Shangri-La CVA38. For a civilian career, Ed worked 35 years as an Ingersoll-Rand industrial air compressor salesman in N.C. and S.C.
One of Ed’s greatest pleasures was spending time with his family and his many friends. Two of his favorite destinations were Folly Beach and Charleston.He enjoyed watching NASCAR races and football. He had a lifelong interest in many different kinds of antique machines, including cars, especially Studebakers, airplanes, compressors, and tractors. He was a member of the Stumptown Tractor Club. He was kind and loving to all, and especially enjoyed all animals and his cat, Felicia.
A celebration of his life will be held at Sunset Road Baptist Church on Sunday, July 6, at 3pm with the Reverend Steve Bass officiating. Visitation will be 1:30-3 prior at the church. Burial will follow at Northlake Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the church’s debt retirement fund.
