I knew Elzie for the last 44 years of his life, so I have a lot of great memories of out times together……especially on the golf course.
Many years ago Elzie and I were attending an Aluminum Industry meeting in Palm Springs. We took two of our biggest customers to PGA West to play a round of golf. Before we teed off I gave Elzie a yardage book to help him, because we were playing the Stadium Course, which is a very difficult track.
The course was just a little too difficult for Elzie’s game, so he had a difficult day. There were quite a few big numbers on the score card. While we were having a drink after the round Elzie slid, the yardage book I had given him, across the table to me.
I said, “You should keep it because you might need it the next time you play this course or as just a token of your memory of our round”. He looked me right in the eye, as he always did and said…….” There is nothing that I want to remember about this round and I’m never playing this course again, ever”.
I invited him to play the course, a number of time over the next several years. His answer was always the same……..”What course are you playing tomorrow”?
Rest in Peace Elzie, I will miss you but I will never forget our times together, on or off the golf course. You were a loyal and amazing friend.
