Elzie Z Borders' Obituary
Elzie Zemri Borders, 91, of Davidson, North Carolina, passed peacefully into the presence of the Lord on May 23, 2026. Born on February 28, 1935, in Shelby, North Carolina, he was the son of Herbert and Laura Falls Borders and was raised in a close-knit farming family he dearly loved.
Elzie graduated from Number 2 High School in Shelby and began his college studies at Gardner-Webb University before pausing to serve his country in the United States Army, including time stationed in Germany. After completing his military service, he continued his education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. It was there, in a religion class, that he met the love of his life, Elaine Gallimore. They were married on September 27, 1958, and shared a devoted, Christ-centered marriage that blessed all who knew them.
Elzie built a distinguished career in the aluminum industry, ultimately serving as President of Noranda Aluminum for nearly a decade. He was respected not only for his leadership but also for his integrity and character.
A man of deep and abiding faith, Elzie enjoyed studying scripture and serving faithfully in his church in many roles. He found joy in playing golf and bridge, and he and Elaine treasured traveling the world together, often alongside dear friends and family. Known for his warmth, sincerity, and outgoing spirit, Elzie formed lasting friendships wherever he went.
Elzie was preceded in death by his parents; his three brothers and four sisters; his beloved wife, Elaine of Davidson; and his son, David of Columbia, South Carolina.
Elzie is survived by his sister, Jewel Brown of Gastonia, North Carolina; his son, Paul Borders and wife Katherine of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina; his daughter, Laura Borders Owen and husband Michael of Huntersville, North Carolina; his daughter-in-law, Jennie Ginis Borders of Charlotte, North Carolina; nine cherished grandchildren; three adored great-grandchildren; and many extended family members, all of whom he loved deeply.
A celebration of Elzie’s life will be held on Sunday, June 14, at 2:30 p.m.at The Pines at Davidson, 400 Avinger Lane, Davidson, North Carolina, with a reception to follow.
