Emily Harvin Hite Grier's Obituary
Emily Harvin Hite Grier, aged 102, of Huntersville, NC, peacefully entered the embrace of our Heavenly Father on Sunday, August 11th, 2024.
Born on January 17, 1922, to Susan Jones and Percy Bethune Harvin in Summerton, South Carolina, Emily was preceded in death by her four brothers, Percy Bethune Harvin, Jr., Thomas Harvey Harvin, Robert Jones Harvin, and Benjamin Skinner Harvin, and her sister, Mary White Harvin Casteen.
Emily graduated from Greenwood High School and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree from Lander University. She was a proud member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society and pursued post-graduate studies at Converse College and the University of South Carolina. She dedicated her career to teaching elementary school in Saint George, Summerton, and Spartanburg, South Carolina.
Beyond her professional achievements, Emily led a fulfilling personal life. She was a devoted teacher in Vacation Bible School, Girls in Action, and Sunday School for many years. She cherished family trips to the beach, mountains, and especially Charleston, where she enjoyed carriage rides and exploring the city’s rich history and culture. Those who knew her best will remember her for her delicious cooking and sweet southern accent.
Emily was preceded in death by her husbands, The Reverend Dr. Everett Ernest Hite, Jr. and Dr. John Miller Grier, and her son, Everett Ernest Hite III. She is survived by her loving children, Susan Hite Pollak (Greg), David Harvin Hite (Vicki), and Martha Ann Hite Seay (Eric), daughter-in-law, Susan Crowson Hite, five grandchildren, Julia Seay, Lauren Seay, Everett Hite (Codi), Jamison Hite Stoddard (Brandon), Michael Hite, one great-grandchild, Lucas Gross, and her extended family, Mary Ann Grier, Dr. John Miller Grier, Jr.(Brenda), Dr. Howard Davis Grier (Sandy), Paul Hayward Grier (Susan), and their families, and many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, August 17, 2024 in Greenwood, S.C. to honor and celebrate Emily’s life.
Emily Hite Grier will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and the countless lives she touched as an educator. Her legacy will endure through the cherished memories and lasting impact she left behind.
