I was so saddened to hear of the passing of Coach Mizelle. He was a great neighbor and coach to me. From the pick up games in his driveway to the court at North Meck he taught be to be a strong person and to push myself. Just the day before his passing I met my sister for dinner after watching my niece play basketball. His name popped up in conversation and we had a good laugh sharing stories of the funny math equations he would make up in class about my sister and her driving, and the funny nicknames he gave. I like to think it would put a smile on his face knowing that 30 years later, his former students and players were still thinking of him. My heartfelt condolences go out to Heather, Judy and the rest of the family. He will be missed.

Coach Mizelle was such a kind-hearted man. Whenever I covered events at North Meck for the paper, he always greeted me with kindness and warmth, and at his ticket gate, he’d nod toward security that I was “good to go.” We’d always catch up on the latest and greatest in news and sports. Once, I did a story on the 1986 state championship team he coached (I think in 2006, the 20th anniversary), and he was great to deal with as I put together the piece. Afterward, he sent me a handwritten note of appreciation. Pure class, all the way. That was Coach Mizelle.

Mr. Mizelle was such an amazing man, teacher, and coach. Those of us who never had him for math would hear of stories of him fighting the dragon, and boy were we missing out!! He had a true love for North Meck and came to games regularly, even in his later years. I also remember seeing him sitting on the porch with his buddy in Cornelius, right across from Food Lion, waving to people as they drove by.
His presence will be missed but his spirit lives on. Well done, thy good and faithful servant!

I first got to know Mr. Mizelle at FBC in Huntersville growing up. I saw his faith in Christ from a very young age. I could not wait to get to high school to have him as a teacher and wow did he not disappoint!! He made learning math so much fun! From all of the nicknames he gave his students, to playing North Meck Squares, to running to Mr. Bacon’s class to tell him the train was coming, and of course the legendary tails of him fighting the dragon, he was the most well loved teacher at North Meck! And while all of those things were quite hilarious, there was also his passion for teaching. My undergrad was in BSME and with that came Calculas I, II, III and differential equations. Because of what Mr. Mizelle taught me in high school calculus in my senior year it made math a breeze in college. More than twenty-five years later the math might be a little rusty but the memories of Mr. Mizelle will never grow dull. May you rest in peace Dear Mr. Mizellle and I will see you in heaven!!
