To the Cox Family,
I have spent the last few hours thinking about what I should say, what I should write...
A sudden and tragic event such as Gavin's are often followed with an overwhelming amount of love, prayers and notes that offer limitless comfort but yet, not enough to fill the void that is left, especially with a person like Gavin.
I felt the best way to help offer comfort was to share some of my fond memories of a man, that had all the right ingredients, that when combined together, people aspire to be like..
How I met Gavin- easy... through my son Jimmy a few years back in my garage. He was very respectful, had a nice personality and extremely genuine....authentic. Being a 49 year old dad of 5, I have seen my fair share of kids, young adults etc... Gavin was different though. He was funny... someone I could relate to. A hard worker. Always wanted to do right. Very easy to like...to talk to...or joke with.
One thing I loved about him was how much he loved his truck and we all know how much he loved that truck!. Me being a car enthusiast along with my son Jimmy I could totally relate to why he would want to wash his big ole 250 school bus several times a week:) That big ole truck was always in my driveway accompanied by my screaming pressure washers, Jimmy and Gavin. Fun to watch.
Another memory is when I would come outside at night, usually taking out the garbage or just checking in on everyone that was at the house, and seeing them talking around a make-shift bonfire in the middle of my driveway. Seeing them laugh.. tell stories, making plans or simply recalling on some of their own memories. Again, very cool to see...
Lastly, having the gift of gab... he was never shy to strike up a conversation with me... or let me tease him about the little things in life...
I am no friend of death but I do believe that each of us are here for a reason and a purpose. For us, he was always there when his friendship and positive thoughts were needed the most. Countless times... I mean, countless times, he was always there for Jimmy during his recovery on the hottest of summer days when Gavin could have easily been at the lake or elsewhere. That speaks to the loudest of volumes on who Gavin was at his core and why their friendship was deep. He will be missed.
Thank you to the Cox Family for sharing Gavin with us and to all that knew him.
With warm condolences,
The Kohlwey Family.
