George Duke Deaton's Obituary
George Duke Deaton, 103, was born on December 5, 1909 in Mecklenburg County to James Duke and Sarah Emmaline Gurley Deaton. He died peacefully Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at Presbyterian Hospital – Huntersville. The family will receive friends at Mallard Creek Presbyterian Church, 1600 Mallard Creek Church Rd., Charlotte, NC 28262 from 9:30 am until 11:00 on Saturday, February 2, 2013. The funeral will begin at 11:00 am and conducted by George’s longtime friend Rev. DeDe Wayland, and Rev. John Wilkerson. Interment will follow immediately in the church cemetery.
George had been a member of Mallard Creek Presbyterian Church for 72 years and belonged to the Robinson Sunday School Class. He had served as an Elder. He also was one of the founding members of The Mallard Creek Volunteer Fire Department, serving as Chief for several years. He was very active in the community; and, was always willing to lend a hand, and more than happy to share a laugh. George had many friends since he never met a stranger. And, in his later years, he enjoyed being interviewed for television and several printed articles. He had worked at Piedmont Auto Exchange and Genuine Parts, retiring in 1975. Having always farmed, he continued to raise crops, cattle and chickens in retirement. For the past two years, George has lived very happily at The Laurels in Highland Creek. He had a wonderful time this past December when The Laurels hosted a birthday reception in his honor.
George was predeceased by his wife of 66 years, Grace Brown Deaton; his daughter Willie Mae Deaton Smoot, a Granddaughter and Great Grandchild. He is survived by his sons George Crawford Deaton, Carl Edward Deaton of Davidson, Thomas Leon Deaton (Mary), 12 Grandchildren, 18 Great Grandchildren and 10 Great-Great Grandchildren. One of fourteen children, he is survived by a brother, Marvin Deaton (Coleen), and two sisters, Beatrice Howard and Betty Jean Cross.
