Janet Sargent
While the leukemic cells won the race against
Lee's good cells, he ultimately won because he passed away
peacefully by my side with no pain. He won because he accomplished seeing
everyone of his siblings and children the weekend before his death while we celebrated his birthday and ate his last meal. He won because he got to see Jaimie Hendricks, who he worked with at Davidson, in the morning which was his wish to me at 4:00am and when
Jaimie arrived he helped us three woman caretakers finally lift him to a
seated position with no pain as he took his final full glass of his
favorite iced green tea which he previously had to sip laying down. He won
because his college roommate Tom Stephenson made it in to town by 5:00pm
on the night Lee died to at least hear a few words uttered from Lee. He won because he had his two sisters, David and I lay hands on him in the afternoon as
his sister Nancy administered the Last Rights. He won because the last
words he uttered were to David as left his room saying that he loved his
dad, Lee uttered back,"Love ya too". He won because he received an
outpouring of support and prayers from all of his family and so many
friends. And in true Lee fashion to add a little humor to all this, he won
because as I was clearing a few things off his desk the morning after he passed away I saw the notice from the DMV that his driver's license expired on his birthday this year, 1/19/13...no hassle to experience there ever again!!!
Together we have given this special man a final good-bye, for now.
With Love and Gratitude,
Janet
