Gerda E. Kirkwood's Obituary
Gerda Ellen Kirkwood, 93, of Davidson went to be with the Lord on February 6, 2023. She was born on December 1, 1929 in Naestved, Denmark to the late Hans and Johanne Rasmussen.
Gerda grew up in a thatched roof home in an area outside of Naestved, Denmark along with her four brothers, prior to the affordability of electricity and telephones. Gerda always said though, that they had what they needed and they had a very good life.
Gerda and her husband to-be Jesse met in Copenhagen, Denmark on Christmas Eve while Jesse was on R and R leave while serving in the U.S. Air Force. They later married in Copenhagen, had their first daughter Ellen, and then made the U.S. their home.
Gerda was a very loving Wife, Mother, Grandmother, and Great-Grandmother. She will lovingly be remembered as a Modern Matriarch of the Kirkwood Family. She was the glue that kept us all in touch with each other and made sure we all felt loved.
Gerda was generous with her time and talents. She had knitted close to one hundred hats, mittens, and scarves for the Homeless Men’s Shelter in Buffalo, NY, received honors for the amount of blood donated to the Red Cross, and along with her husband Jesse, delivered Meals on Wheels for many years through the snow blizzards of Buffalo, NY. After she and Jesse moved to Davidson, Gerda baked cupcakes for every holiday and delivered them to the Angles and Sparrows Soup Kitchen. She also made purchases of the “most needed items” to donate to Lydia’s Loft, and so many more acts of kindness that we will never know. In the giving of herself, Gerda has left a remarkable impression on our small piece of the world.
Survivors include her daughter, Sandra Fulmer (Stan); 3 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Jesse Kirkwood and her daughter Ellen Lockhart.
Memorials may be made to the Gillwood Presbyterian Church.
The funeral service will be held at 2:00 Friday, February 10 at Gilwood Presbyterian with visitation one hour before the funeral. Burial will follow at Mt. Zion Community.
James Funeral Home of Huntersville is serving family.
