Helen stole away to Jesus on Monday, Oct. 12 and for those who knew her and loved her, it has been hard to live without her gracious and beautiful spirit. She was always the first to smile and say hello to anyone she met. Her warmth and her love of Christ was so powerful and it shown so brightly in her and though her.
I was the lucky one to have met her more than 4 years ago when I volunteered to be an art teacher on the weekends at the Huntersville Oaks skilled nursing home. She was my first student that first Saturday and her willingness to try new things, even then - at the age of 89 - is something that I still marvel about.
What if we could all be more like Helen and just be brave enough and enthusiastic enough to try something we’ve never done before. Well, Helen excelled at art and became known as the resident “Grandma Moses” who also started painting at age 89.
Some of Helen’s beautiful paintings and colored drawings are on display in the Huntersville Oaks lobby and art gallery. Also, many in her family and dear friends also received many of her masterpieces.
One of the last times that I spoke to Helen, we talked about creating an art program at the Stanley Manor skilled nursing center in Stanley. I believe that will be a beautiful way to honor my beautiful friend, who I loved so very much.
May you have “Peace beyond all understanding through Christ” to all those who mourn and miss Helen. Amen
