Helen Ramsay Akeley's Obituary
Helen Ramsay Akeley, age 77, of Huntersville, died on Tuesday, January 30, 2018. Helen was born in Edinburgh, Scotland to the late William and Jean Kerr Ramsey. She was the wife of Leon F. Akeley for 62 years.
Ellen grew up in Edinburgh Scotland and immigrated to Auburn Maine as a teenager with her parents. She married Leon and accompanied him on four years of college at the University of Maine after his military service. She and the family lived in five US states, the latest being in the Charlotte area for 42 years. Helen was very active with her bible study group and other activities at the Holy Spirit Catholic Church where she was a member.
In addition to her husband, Leon, of the home, Helen is survived by her children; Linda Ernst, (Loren) of Charlotte, Peter Akeley (Lisa) of Winston Salem, Michael Akeley (Jennifer) of Charlotte, Pamela Van Landingham of Huntersville, four grandchildren; Noelle, Kristin, Peter, Jr., and Jordan, six great grandchildren and a cousin, Stewart Ramsay of Aberdeen, Scotland. Helen is predeceased by her granddaughters, Allyson Akeley in 1996 and Natalee Van Landingham in 2017.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 pm, Friday, February 2, 2018, at James Funeral Home, 10520 Arahova Drive, Huntersville. A Funeral Mass will be at 12:00 pm, Saturday, February 3rd, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 537 N. Hwy 16, Denver NC 28037. Burial will follow at Mt. Zion UMC Cemetery, 11420 Smith Rd., Cornelius.
