Jack Mayes' Obituary
Jack Edward Mayes, 82 of Charlotte, died August 6, 2014. He was born on September 30, 1931 in Mecklenburg County to the late Lamont and Myrtle Johnston Mayes.
Survivors include his wife Carol Amelia Young Mayes; daughter, Dawn Mayes; son, Jonathan Mayes both of Charlotte; and sister, Peggy Mayes Craven and her husband Walter of Huntersville. Jack was preceded in death by brothers John, Lamont Jr., George and Robert Mayes; and sisters, Daisy Mayes Shelton, Ellen Mayes Green, Jean Mayes Knox.
Jack graduated from Cornelius High School and from Carolina Business College with a diploma in accounting and motor traffic management. Jack was employed by the Mecklenburg County Tax Office for 35 years. Upon his retirement in 1995, he held the position of supervisor of Business Personal Property. From 1979-1982, he was the tax supervisor for Mecklenburg County. Jack was a member of the NC Association of Assessing Officers from 1966-1995, serving on the association’s executive committee, as well as treasurer and secretary. He was an active member of the International Association of Assessing Officers (IAAO) from 1966 until his death. Jack enthusiastically served on numerous committees, and taught and wrote instructional materials for the organization. He was honored to serve multiple terms on the IAAO Ethics Committee and was elected to the IAAO Executive Board. For his service to the organization, Jack received awards for IAAO’s most valuable member in 1985, received 2 presidential citations and received the organizations prestigious McCarron Award.
Jack loved his church. He was an active and faithful member of Northside Baptist Church for 51 years. For 40 years, Jack was a member of the choir and taught the second grade boys Sunday School class. He also served multiple terms on the church’s deacon board.
A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, August 9 at Northside Baptist Church with Rev. Barry Shearer officiating. Visitation will be in the sanctuary from 2:00-3:00 prior. Burial will follow at Gethsemane Memorial Gardens.
