Jacqueline "Jackie" Zamora's Obituary
Jacqueline “Jackie” Zamora
May 11, 1939 – July 4, 2026
(Versión en español en la parte inferior)
Jacqueline “Jackie” Zamora, born Jacqueline Serra Tossas in Ponce, Puerto Rico, peacefully entered into eternal rest on the morning of July 4, 2026, at the age of 87.
It seems fitting that on Independence Day, her soul found its own freedom—finally released from the body that could no longer keep pace with the vibrant spirit that defined her throughout her life.
Some of Jackie’s fondest childhood memories were of visiting her beloved Tita, enjoying coconut ice cream, and experiencing the simpler times. Even as a child, she possessed an independent spirit and a determination that would remain with her throughout her life. She was never one to accept “no” as the final answer and was always willing to take matters into her own hands when she believed something was worth pursuing. Whether right or wrong… it was her way.
That same adventurous, bohemian spirit eventually carried her across Europe, where she developed a lifelong appreciation for history, culture, architecture, music, and the traditions that connected people across generations. Those experiences became part of who she was and influenced the way she viewed the world for the rest of her life. Jackie believed there was always something to learn from other people, other cultures, and other ways of seeing life. She believed we should always find a way to incorporate some of those learnings into our own lives.
Upon returning to the Americas, Jackie first pursued a career in education because she believed in helping others discover their potential. Realizing that teaching was not the right fit for her independent nature, she boldly chose a new path and entered law school. After graduating, she became a practicing attorney in Florida. It was during that chapter of her life that she met the love of her life, Roberto Zamora.
Not long afterward, fate altered the course of her career and their lives following the lasting effects of a serious accident. While it prevented her from continuing to practice law, it never diminished her determination, her adventurous spirit, or her zest for life. Together, Jackie and Roberto chose to embrace a new beginning with their young son Robert, leaving behind the familiar and starting afresh in Costa Rica, a new land where they knew no one and were free to build a life entirely their own. There, they built a remarkable life filled with deep friendships, meaningful relationships, and a community they would always consider home.
Although Costa Rica became home, Jackie never stopped exploring the world. She treasured traveling with Roberto and her family, finding joy in experiencing different cultures and perspectives. Whether visiting Mexico, Canada, New York, California, Singapore, China, or countless other destinations, Jackie delighted in learning how others lived, believing that understanding different people ultimately revealed how much we all share in common, while at the same time always sharing her positivity and amazing dance moves.
In 2008, the birth of her granddaughter, Zoe Marie, changed everything. Without hesitation, Jackie and Roberto rushed to North Carolina to help welcome their first grandchild into the world. What began as a visit soon became a new chapter in life, as they chose to relocate to be close to the family they cherished most. Four years later, the arrival of her grandson, Robert Nicholas, completed the family she adored and forever cemented her roots in North Carolina.
Nothing brought Jackie greater joy than being “Abuelita.” She embraced every opportunity to be present in her grandchildren’s lives. She was Robert’s biggest fan and first ever basketball coach, spending countless hours encouraging him, while fiercely supporting Zoe in becoming exactly who she was meant to be—an independent soul that embraces the differences around us, just like her Abuelita. More than anything, Jackie believed in showing up. Her greatest lesson to those she loved was that perfection was never the goal—being present for the people who matter most was.
Jackie was born to the late Armando Serra and Mary Tossas. She was preceded in death by her sister, Aimee Serra, and is survived by her beloved and devoted husband of fifty-three years, Roberto Zamora; her sons, Robert Zamora and Jose Alberto Morales; her daughters-in-law, Sherry Zamora and Mayra Vargas; her beloved grandchildren Zoe Marie Zamora and Robert Nicholas Zamora III; her older brother, Armando Serra; and countless extended family members and dear friends whose lives were forever enriched by knowing her.
Her family takes comfort in knowing that Jackie’s vibrant spirit is once again free. Though her body could no longer keep pace with the extraordinary woman she had always been, her love, her strength, and her unforgettable spirit continue to live on in everyone she touched.
A Funeral Mass celebrating Jackie’s life and faith will be held at St. Mark Catholic Church in Huntersville, NC, on July 10th at 11am, followed by her final journey home to her earthly resting place. Funeral arrangements are being handled by James Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks only for your prayers, your presence, and that you honor Jackie’s memory by being fully present for those you love—just as she always was.
If you wish to do anything further, Jackie would have appreciated support for causes that were close to her heart:
Helping children who are ill or facing difficult circumstances.
Advancing research to improve the quality of life for those living with Alzheimer’s disease and to better understand and treat autoimmune diseases such as Myasthenia Gravis.

Jacqueline “Jackie” Zamora
11 de mayo de 1939 – 4 de julio de 2026
