Janie Turner's Obituary
Janie Brown Turner, 84, of Charlotte went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Friday, March 28, 2025. She passed as she lived, peacefully and surrounded by her loving family.
Janie was born on July 11, 1940, in Sanford, Florida to the late Robert and Helen Brown. She is survived by her husband, Reverend James Phillip (Phil) Turner; daughters, Kathy Whittington and husband Danny of Boone, N.C., Patty Wimberly and her husband Rob of Newton, N.C., and Teri Lynn Perna of Belmont, N.C.; step children, Jim Turner and wife Mary Konsulas, Nancy Pfost and husband Sean, and Jeff Turner; sisters, Barbara Bowes and Deborah Brown; 14 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
From the moment Phil met Janie, God told him she was to be his “helpmeet” and to this day, he still refers to her as his “sweetheart.” Affectionally known as a pastor's wife, Janie not only supported Phil but also the congregations to whom God led them. She volunteered at Hot Dog lunches, church outings, visitations, and lunch with her Sunday school group.
Janie loved watching her “soaps”, along with her favorites, Wheel of Fortune, Johnny Carson, and Carol Burnett. She was a great cook from years of preparing well-loved meals particularly her potato salad, chocolate fudge, and a mean pot roast. She loved playing canasta and cards with friends.
As the matriarch of her tribe, Janie unconditionally loved and supported each of them even when others might not. Her daughters fondly remember growing up with day trips to Cocoa Beach, sharing her Red Twizzlers to keep them entertained while she shopped, and emergency trips to the beauty parlor to fix her hair color. All her family would agree that she instinctively knew from the sound of their voices how they were feeling and responded lovingly. Janie led by example, God first, family second!
Janie’s memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 5th at Pleasant Grove UMC, Charlotte, N.C. Visitation will begin at 1pm followed by the service and burial. The service will be conducted by Reverand Billy Towery and Reverand Glenda Bennett.
James Funeral Home of Huntersville is serving the family.
