John Hansil's Obituary
John W. Hansil, 89, of Concord, formerly of Huntersville, died January 4, 2018.
A graduate of Belmont High School, John received B.S. and M.A. degrees from Western Carolina University and his Ed.D. from the University of Tennessee. John served his country for three years in the United States Marine Corps. After college John served as a teacher and coach in Cumberland County, and as a principal at Huntersville Elementary and John McKnitt Alexander Junior High School. In 1967, he was appointed Executive Director for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Auxiliary Services Department.
John was a long time member of his church and community where he was active in many of its ministries and projects. A member of the Lions Club since 1957, he served as president for three different terms. Twice John received the Huntersville Man of the Year award.
Professionally, John was an active member and past president of the Southeastern Association of School Business Officials (SASBO), and also a member and North Carolina Director of the International Council of Educational Facility Planners (CEFP).
John enjoyed sports all his life, playing football and baseball in college. He played professional baseball in Stellarton, Nova Scotia and with the old Western Carolina League in Morganton and Lexington, North Carolina. John played golf with the same foursome for 30 years and as he aged, was still competitive on the golf course.
Always busy, after retirement John took a basket making course at Central Piedmont and became a master basket maker. He taught scores of senior adults to make baskets and continued to do so when he moved to The Taylor Glen Retirement Home in Concord. Also, there are blue bird houses in many yards and on many golf courses all over North Carolina made by John. Giving them away provided him as much pleasure as making them. He also contributed many hours working on Habitat for Humanity homes.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Lonnie and Ethel Hansil and his son-in-law Michael Armstrong.
He is survived by his wife, Wanda, and his children, Meg Armstrong, John, Jr. (Lisa), and Mary Greer (David). Surviving grandchildren are John Irvin (Amanda), Bailey (Mandy), Justin, Julia, Dustin, Brooke and great-grandchildren Charlotte and Parker.
