Jon Guttman's Obituary
Jon Robert Guttman died in Davidson, North Carolina on Wednesday, July 9, 2014. Born in Long Island, New York on May 4, 1948, he was the son of Abraham and Irene Guttman, and a graduate of New York University.
In New York City, Mr. Guttman was the benefits producer for Friends In Deed, an organization dedicated to serving the non-medical needs of those with terminal illnesses. He moved to Davidson in 2000,with his husband, Lewis Deaton, in order to care for Mr. Deaton's widowed mother, Eugenia Deaton, whose husband Rockwell Deaton, had recently died. Mr. Guttman was Mrs. Deaton's primary caretaker until her death in 2006.
Mr. Guttman and Mr. Deaton remained in Davidson after Mrs. Deaton's death, volunteering in the community and expanding their large circle of friends. In 2012, Mr. Deaton died after an extraordinary two- and- a- half-year battle with cancer. Mr. Guttman cared for Mr. Deaton in their home, with the ongoing support of physicians and Hospice of Lake Norman.
While in Davidson, Mr. Guttman turned full time to creative writing, and as a co-author, he completed two novels, one of which, "Madame President," was published in 2011.
Mr. Guttman is survived by a son: Jeffrey Guttman and his wife, Ellyn Guttman and their two children, Zoey and Maddox; a daughter, Amy Guttman Sutter and her husband Keith Sutter and their twin sons, Leo and Charlie. He is survived also by his mother, Irene Guttman; his brothers Gary Guttman and his wife Patti Guttman, Gar Guttman and his wife Deborah Jaret, and his sister Patti Siegel and her husband Bill Siegel. Mr. Guttman's many nephews, nieces, and cousins were held in his affection.
A funeral service will be held at 3 PM Monday, July 14 in the chapel of James Funeral Home, 10520 Arahova. Dr. Huntersville. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Mimosa Cemetery in Davidson.
