My favorite experience with Joyce was when we drove up to Cleveland together to see her family. The adventure started when we were in West Virginia and the interstate got shut down in both directions because of an accident. Off we went into the backcountry. We had a beautiful tour of the state before finally making it far enough north to actually recognize where we were. We finally made it to brother Bill’s house and had a delightful stay with Bill and Rosie. It was so nice to put faces to all the names we heard about when drinking wine on the porch with the neighbors back home. Joyce took me around to her old stomping grounds – the neighborhood where she grew up, the Catholic school, her friend Peggy’s house, the telephone company office she used to work at – which Bell was that anyway?
I’m so happy she asked me to join her for that trip. Traveling together and spending time with family helped create a bond between us that strengthened as time went on. I’m really going to miss you Joyce.
