R S Spencer Jr
To All of Julian's Family:
Here in Hyde where we hold his Spencer family reunion every year, we will look back
with fond memories of the times Julian could be with us. We admired his "Net and Needle"
poem that I wanted him to read every time he attended. I know it referred to his Spencer
grandfather - my Uncle Billy John who was my father's brother. Billy John was the oldest
of all of Kit and Mary Ben's children. I was only six years old when he died. As we were
driving away from the cemetery, I said "Mama, look Daddy is crying" as a tear rolled down
his cheek. That was the only time in my life that I saw my Daddy cry. With Daddy at home
with his parents and Uncle Billy John living next door and Daddy's store nearby, I think
they saw each other most days. Daddy told me about Uncle Billy John bringing home shrimp
to feed his hogs because there was practically no market for shrimp in the old days. We will miss Julian at our reunion but hope to see Emily and her family and any others of Julian's family that can attend.
