Julian D. Mason,'s Obituary
Julian Dewey Mason, Jr., of Davidson, poet and scholar, died March 20, 2018, in a Charlotte hospital, five days shy of his eighty-seventh birthday.
He was born March 25,1931, in Washington, North Carolina, to Julian Dewey Mason and Lillie Spencer Mason of Hyde County. He grew up in Williamston, NC and married Elsie May of Pitt County on June 9,1954.
Julian graduated from UNC Chapel Hill, ABEd (1953); Vanderbilt University, MA (1954); and UNC Chapel Hill, PhD (1962). He was drafted in August 1955 and served in the Third Armored Division, US Army, in Gelnhausen, Germany.
Dr. Mason was a professor and administrator at UNC Chapel Hill and UNC Charlotte. He spent two years in the Manuscripts Division of the Library of Congress. His publications include The Poems of Phillis Wheatley,(UNC Press,1966, 1989); numerous scholarly articles; and his poetry.
His wife, three children and their families survive him: son, Christopher May Mason (Valerie Schwarz Mason),grandson, Cameron Maximilian Mason, New York, NY; daughter, Rebecca Mason Persinger (David William Persinger), Hickory, NC, granddaughter, Julie Catherine Persinger, Raleigh, NC; and daughter, Emily Mason Bloom (Dr.Timothy John Bloom), grandchildren, John Michael Bloom and Anne Lindsay Bloom, Winchester, VA; as do valued cousins and in-laws.
