Laura Varney's Obituary
Huntersville, NC — With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Laura Allen Varney, 66, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, who departed this world on October 1, 2024. She was born on January 9, 1958, in Portland, ME to the late Wayne and Monica Allen. Survivors include her husband, Walter "Skip" Varney, sons and their wives, Nathan and Inga, and Dayne and Simly; siblings, Lynn, Lee, Lyle, and Lily; and grandchildren, Owen and Griffin.
Raised in the picturesque setting of Windham, Maine, on the historic Sunset Farm, Laura’s childhood was defined by laughter, adventure, and a deep connection to the land and the animals she cherished.
From her tomboy days spent tending to the animals and exploring the great outdoors with her siblings, to forming lifelong bonds with her close-knit group of friends known affectionately as the “76ers,” Laura’s spirit was always one of joy and camaraderie. She embraced life with a warm heart and an open mind, always ready to lend a helping hand or a listening ear to those in need.
As a devoted mother, Laura was a constant presence in her sons’ lives. Whether she was coaching their sports teams, cheering them on at martial arts competitions, or sharing in the simple joys of everyday life, she poured her heart into every moment. Her passion for nurturing extended to her grandsons, whom she adored and lovingly supported in their milestones—teaching them to read and swim, all while creating cherished memories that will last a lifetime.
Laura’s love knew no bounds, and her family was her greatest treasure. She and Skip made the remarkable decision to relocate from Maine to Arizona, and later to North Carolina, all to remain close to her grandchildren. Her grandsons eagerly awaited her visits, knowing they would be met with warm hugs and endless affection from their beloved “Nan”.
Laura’s life was a testament to love, loyalty, and kindness. She touched the hearts of everyone fortunate enough to know her. As we remember Laura, let us carry forward her legacy of compassion and generosity. She will be profoundly missed, but her spirit will live on in the memories we hold dear.
A celebration of Laura’s life will be held on Sunset Farm in 2025. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to either the ALS Association or the Maine Cancer Foundation, reflecting Laura’s love for helping others.
Rest in peace, dear Laura. Your love will continue to shine brightly in our hearts.
