Lucy was a treasure to all that were lucky enough to know her. I worked with Lucy at Bren Park Elementary School. She always had a friendly smile and an offer to help. She didn't know how to sit still and was always asking, sometimes begging for work to do. Don't you have papers I can grade? Something that needs organizing? She loved to stay busy and she loved knowing that she was making your life a little bit easier. And she did make a difference! If she was the one organizing your test materials you could be sure you had everything you needed and that all the pencils would be sharpened. She was very attentive to details.
I kept in touch with Lucy over the years and Phuong and I went down to visit her once to celebrate her upcoming 90th birthday. We hadn't seen her in a while so it was great to catch up and see her lovely house in NC.
During that visit Lucy pulled out her math notebooks to show us. She often worked on algebra. She worked a problem in the book and then compared her work to the answer in the back. If the answers matched, she moved on. If her answer was different, she sought help or kept at it until she figured out why her answer was different. She was a lifelong learner who liked to keep her mind active by taking her knowledge to the next level.
Lucy was a strong lady who lived through a lot of pain in her later years with dignity and positive thinking. I enjoyed keeping up with her on the phone but missed seeing that beautiful smile.
We miss you Lucy but are comforted to know that you are now with Mario.
