Martha Ann Mullis Sloan
October 27, 1932 – May 17, 2019
Martha Ann Mullis Sloan, loving sister, wife, mother and grandmother joined her beloved Wendell in the glorious presence of God on May 17, 2019 while being cared for at the Tucker Hospice House in Kannapolis, NC. Martha’s family and friends were blessed to be able to spend time with her for the last couple of months.
Martha was the first of five children of Brodis Lindsey Mullis and Mary Malinda Griffin Mullis. Martha was born in Unionville Township near Monroe NC on October 27, 1932. Martha graduated from Charlotte Technical High School in 1951 and attended Mars Hill College. She enjoyed attending the monthly luncheons of Tech graduates fondly referred to as the Tech High Lunch Bunch.
Martha’s family attended Allen Street Baptist Church in Charlotte where Martha met her husband of 47 years Wendell DuRand Sloan. Martha served along side Wendell over the course of their loving marriage at FBC Augusta, Ga; Pritchard Memorial Baptist Church in Charlotte; FBC Richmond, Va; FBC Charlotte; and Providence Baptist Church in Charlotte. Martha was a loving wife and consummate supporter of Wendell’s professional life as a Minister of Education and Business Adminstrator.
Martha held a variety of professional positions. She was a secretary, a bookkeeper, a bank teller and finally retired from the Trust Dept at NCNB (now BOA) in Charlotte. She revered her title of believer, wife and mother, her most important roles.
Martha’s life touched so many people. When she retired Martha and Wendell completed three mission trips to Europe serving seminaries in Switzerland and Prague. Martha had numerous talents and interests. She was a fantastic cook, an excellent seamstress, a missionary, and loved gardening and canning the fruits of the garden. First and foremost Martha was a servant of the Lord. She had tremendous faith in God’s grace and love.
Left to cherish Martha’s memory are her children Deborah Sloan Skinner and husband John of Youngsville NC; Wendell Wayne Sloan and wife Barbara of Wendell NC; Meloney Sloan Liebler and husband Bill of Huntersville NC; her grandchildren Lyndsey Ann Sloan of Wilmington; Davis DuRand Sloan of Wendell NC; Amanda Drew Sloan of Charlotte NC; Mary Celeste Skinner of Raleigh NC; Shelby Rae Liebler of Huntersville NC; brother Joe Mullis and wife Mildred of Peach Tree City GA; sister-in-law Betty Jo Mullis of Matthews NC; sister-in-law Sherry Mullis of Concord NC; sister-in-law Catherine Hines Sloan of Atlanta GA and an extended family of great nieces, nephew and their husbands, wives and children.
