Michael Hillman's Obituary
Michael “Mike” Hillman, 73, of Huntersville, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 22, surrounded by his loving wife and daughters. Born June 28, 1952, Mike was the fifth of seven children born to the late Howard Charles Hillman, Sr. and Gladys Ruth Hillman. His grandparents, Ola and Henry Smith, played a special role in his childhood, and he cherished the time spent with his grandfather, who helped shape him into the caring, hardworking man he became.
Mike grew up in Derita and graduated from North Mecklenburg High School before studying briefly at Wingate University. He proudly served in the Army National Guard for 17 years, achieving the rank of Captain — a role he valued, though it was one of many responsibilities he balanced throughout his hardworking life.
A true jack-of-all-trades, Mike held numerous jobs in construction over the years and even owned his own company. He was known for being able to fix or build just about anything, and his craftsmanship, skill, and creativity earned him a reputation as someone you could always count on when something needed doing.
Softball was one of Mike’s greatest passions. He coached many Mallard Creek teams and all-star teams and became well-known in the community as “one heck of a softball coach.” As a player, he pitched on several championship teams, forming friendships and memories that stood the test of time.
Mike’s heart belonged fully to his family. His wife, Susie, and daughters, Kristin and Laura, were deeply loved and undoubtedly spoiled — though not nearly as much as his beloved granddaughters, Avery and Layla, who were spoiled absolutely rotten. Being “Grandpa” was his greatest joy, and he poured his whole heart into that role.
Mike and Susie knew profound heartbreak with the sudden loss of their son Josh at the age of 17 in 1993. Mike spoke often of how he looked forward to seeing Josh again in heaven, along with many other friends and family members who went before him. His unwavering faith gave him comfort, hope, and strength throughout his life.
A devout Christian, Mike knew the Bible better than most and lived his faith with humility and conviction. He was deeply involved at Oak Grove Church, especially in outreach, and even preached a sermon one Sunday — something he cherished. Even during his final days in the hospital, very sick, he continued encouraging the staff and sharing God’s love whenever he could.
Mike loved the simple pleasures: cooking for his family (his famous chicken and dumplings were legendary), cheering for the Carolina Panthers, enjoying chocolate and ice cream, and debating just about anything with just about anyone. He had an unmatched gift for offering solid, heartfelt advice, and he was the person many turned to when life grew difficult.
Above all, Mike lived with tremendous and unwavering faith in the Lord. His trust in God never faltered, and his life was a reflection of that steady devotion.
Mike leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, service, humor, faith, and family. He will be missed more deeply than words can express and remembered with gratitude by all who were blessed to know him.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 25, from 5:00 - 7:00 PM at James Funeral Home in Huntersville. The funeral will be held on Wednesday, November 26, 11:00 AM at Oak Grove Church in Charlotte, NC. The interment will follow at Bethel Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Cornelius, NC.
Mike was as down-to-earth as they come, and he would want everyone to feel comfortable while remembering him and celebrating his life. In his honor, the family encourages everyone attending the visitation or funeral service to wear comfortable, casual clothing—blue jeans are a perfect option.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Oak Grove Church, 6440 Old Statesville Road, Charlotte, NC 28269,
A place that meant so much to Mike and where he lived out his faith in service and love.
James Funeral Home, of Huntersville, is serving the family and obituary lovingly written by the family.
