Lt Cdr Rob Stephens Royal Navy
Anne and I have had the enormous pleasure of knowing Dick for the last 6 years. Although we are Brits we had purchased a house in Del Tura, Florida and were keen to take up golf. Dick was introduced to us a possible mentor and from the first tee we immediately knew that we had a great friend in the making. So each week we met on the course and Dick imparted his considerable golfing experience, we still smile about him calling my wife kiddo as he congratulated her on her improving abilities. It wasn’t long before Dick opened up about his experiences in the Army and life in a POW camp in Korea. As an ex military man myself I was amazed at what he had endured and yet how much he respected the Koreans. But it wasn’t all doom and gloom when you were speaking to Dick. He had a great sense of humour and a vast array of jokes that he would tell. I’m not too sure if Cameron enjoyed some of them.
But Dick knew that his stay at Del Tura was coming to an end and with the wonderful help of his children he moved closer to them. Although we missed him being around we knew that he was doing the right thing. We loved him dearly and whilst he will be missed we have wonderful memories of him. The following images were taken at his Birthday in Del Tura.
