Robert Joseph Berthelot's Obituary
Robert J. Berthelot Sr., of Huntersville, passed peacefully on March 16th, 2015 at the Levine & Dickson Hospice House in Huntersville, NC. Bob was born at Baptist hospital in New Orleans, LA on October 13, 1942 to Hilda A. Seidel-Berthelot and Frank D. Berthelot. He was raised in Algiers Point on Bermuda Street. Throughout his life, he lived with his family in New Orleans, Metairie, Kenner, Arabi, Hammond, Avondale and finally with his son, Matthew, in Huntersville, NC.
Bob was the devoted husband of Edith Goldthwaite Berthelot for the last 30 years. He loved her 5 children and 10 grandchildren very much. Bob was previously the faithful husband of 12 years to the late Melody Margaret Lala and loving father of Robert J. Berthelot, Jr. (Melissa), Matthew J. Berthelot (Kelly) and Christine Berthelot Holmes (Will), grandfather of Mitchell J. Berthelot, Danielle M. Berthelot, Sabreena G. Holmes, Trinity A. Holmes, and Serena V. Holmes. He is survived by his eldest brother Frank G. Berthelot (87) and preceded in death by his sister Gladys A. Williams and brother Joseph A. Berthelot.
Mr. Berthelot graduated Holy Name of Mary grammar school, St. Aloysius High, and Loyola University. A career accountant, Bob served 19 years in the Louisiana Air National Guard, worked for Dole Pineapple, Standard Fruit and retired from Freeport Sulfur (McMoRan) in New Orleans. In retirement, he enjoyed working part-time at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park in Robert, LA. He remained a faithful Catholic his entire life and an unselfish man of his word. He enjoyed cooking, bridge (cards), and always made time for his family and loved ones.
Bob was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) in late 2013. By December 2013, he was on ventilator support and under the constant care of his daughter Christine and family. In late May 2014, he moved to Charlotte, NC to be cared for by his son Matthew’s family and to begin a process of slowly surrendering to ALS. Our family would like to thank Ann Gillette, Kelly Berthelot, Georgia Marnell, Will Holmes, Gordon Howe, Danny Young and Kathy Young whose selfless work assisting with Bob's care will always be cherished.
Bob was a kind man that will be greatly missed. Friends and family are invited to attend the mass in his honor on March 28th at 11:00 am, St. Albert Church, Hammond, Louisiana 409 W. Dakota St. 70401. Family visitation will begin at 9:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, please consider supporting the ALS Ride for Life or ALS Guardian Angels charities. Both of these lesser known charities helped our family significantly in our time of need. www.alsrideforlife.org and www.alsguardianangels.com
