Heaven to me was sailing thru the dip and drifting out beneath the bridge. I hope there is a little kudzu and red dust up there. Thanks for your friendship.

We feel so fortunate to have had such a special person as a part of our lives for so many years.
The memories with Rick will never be forgotten!
Roger & Nancy Mandeville
I first met Rick many years ago when I started participating in Highlands Sports Car Club events in Asheville the day after turning 18. His loose organization of racing friends who dubbed themselves FAT Racing accepted me though I was still young and didn’t drive a FIAT, their cars of choice. Rick was welcoming and always ready with a smile and joke and invitation to a get together whether to drive or just have a good time. He went on to great success and though he moved away from Asheville, we bumped into each other, at Chimney Rock, the Atlanta airport where he was on his way to be a race announcer somewhere, or closer to home, where he was shopping for something to keep geese from desecrating his yard! Those of us who knew him will always treasure memories of his smile and ready wit.
Its always sad to loose a long time friend- I've know Rick for over 50 years- we met at a formation meeting for the Highlands Sports Car Club- During those early times we founded the FAT (Fiat Racing Team) with our other long time friend, Jack Moody- It was a great experience wit both Rick and Jack raced professionally with great success-
However, wihat I'll miss most is his charm and wit- one of the few people I ever met who could tell stories without a break for hours on end and never repeat one-As the only remaining origianial member of Fat I will take some of Rick on a last ride at VIR this spring- We will drink a toast and remember such a wonderful person-
Yes, I'm sad and miss him already- He was always a good friend and could cheer up our group if things were not going out way-
I promised Todd and Robert I'd rely a story or 2 but where to start as there were so many- So , just one- Rick led a group of fellow racers from Ashevile to Johnson City for an autocross- halfway there its starting snowing and we stopped- It was about 30 people one the side of the road- In typical Rick manner he said "Its a shame to waste a crowd" We all headed back to my place in Asheville for a truly know down party- some people didn't leave for several days- all because of Rick-
I could go on and on but I just want to say I loved that guy and will really miss him
Safe Travels Rick
Rick and I have been great friends for the last 17 years. We met at the Virginia International Raceway back in 2008. His uncanny wit and timely "one liners" always had those around him in stitches.
From 2012-2016 I opened a race shop building racing engines for Spec Miata racecars. He would pop in several times a week to hang out, or often times go to work. He always refused to let me pay him as it was a fun social engagement to be around people with common interests and wasn't work at all.
This past Saturday I was racing in a 14 Hr race at Road Atlanta in the ChampCar Endurance Series. I remember barreling down the backstraight at 130+ mph, when I spotted Rick's old Spec Miata there racing with it. It's checkerboard roof is unmistakable. I didn't know it had changed hands again and was now racing in the CC series. For some reason, seeing it racing again brought me to tears in the car, literally while I was driving. I'm talking ugly cry. It was just another car on track. No reason for that emotional response, but I couldn't wait to call Rick to tell him I had seen his car racing again, and to tell him about our race, as I often did after race weekends.
I called him on my ride home on Sunday and he didn't answer. I left a message, and he didn't call back after two days. He always returns my calls. I looked last night and found his obit online, where I learned he passed away during our race. I'm not a very spiritual person, but how can I think anything other than I had just witnessed my friend Rick making his final laps around Road Atlanta? I choose to believe he chose the most fitting way for him to to say "goodbye for now".
Never has the term "Godspeed" been more appropriate. I'll miss our time together at the track, and our periodic lunch dates. Wherever you are, you're surely making those around you laugh, I have no doubt. I couldn't have asked for a better true friend.
Rest in peace my friend,
Dan Tiley
